The Saturday marks seven years of the event known as “the Tarajal Tragedy” and the Civil Guard. On 6 February 2014, 14 people drowned near Tarajal Beach (Ceuta). The deceased were migrants to Spain and, while swimming in the attempt to cross the border between Morocco and Spain, were attacked by the Civil Guard with rubber balls and tear gas, causing the death of fifteen people. Since then, every year in Ceuta the March for Dignity has been celebrated in memory of the deaths of deceased people and in general of migration policies, as well as the systematic violations of human rights.
This year, due to the situation caused by COVID-19, they will not be able to maintain their annual approach, as the influx of public was massive. However, the initiative has not been suspended but has been adapted: The event will spread throughout the Spanish State, replacing with local events the one usually held in Ceuta. Also in Hego Euskal Herria, concentrations have been called for Saturday under the motto “Before the policies of death: memory, life, rights”: In Bilbao, in Plaza Moyua, in front of the Government’s Subdelegation at 17:30; in Pamplona, in Plaza del Castillo at 17:30; in Donostia-San Sebastián, at 12:00;
