They report that the surf park of Donostia-San Sebastian would destroy the habitat of many birds in danger of extinction
  • The gigantic infrastructure that they intend to build on Antondegi, in the Martutene neighbourhood, for surfing, has aroused concern in the ornithological society Itsas Enara and in SEO/BirdLife, dedicated to the research, protection and dissemination of birds and their habitats. They recalled that there are at least 117 species of birds on this site, of which 29 are included in the Catalogue of Endangered Species of the Basque Government. The project would "put it at risk", they said.

According to the Naiz media, these two associations expressed their "concern" about the construction of a railway infrastructure in the Antondegi area, between Donostia-San Sebastián and Astigarraga. “It’s a place with great ecological value,” they said.

The public was informed that at least 117 species of birds were detected on this mountain, according to the records of the eBird platform for citizen science. Of these, 84 are included in the List of Birds of Special Protection of the Spanish State and 29 in the Catalogue of Threatened Species of the Basque Government.

The case of a bird in danger of extinction, such as the red milano or milvus milvus, stands out. “An artificial wave park would seriously compromise these birds by significantly modifying their habitats.”

As regards the negative effects to be added to the artificialisation of the soil, it also mentions the displacements of attendees and other uses to be given to these facilities.

The municipal government of Eneko Goia wants to build a nine-hectare infrastructure in Martutene, the newspaper El Diario Vasco reported on 30 December. This Surf Park would be located four kilometers from the sea, in one of the few undeveloped mountains in the vicinity of the city, in Antondegi.
