The Satorralaia movement held a press conference on Thursday to give its opinion on the incidents that have taken place in the works of the Donostia-San Sebastián metro. The demonstration will start at 12:00 hours from Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea and will travel the streets of the city until it reaches Boulevard.
For Satorralai, the serious problems suffered by the works, such as the cost overrun – over 80% and the interruption of the works – reveal the "chaotic" situation of the project and the "nonsense" of the metro. As explained, the river tides of Donostia-San Sebastian are digging sandy soils, leading to the risk of destabilising the subsoil of the centre of Donostia-San Sebastián and the Amara district: “It’s been designed with great ignorance.”
The Anti-Metro Movement considers "unacceptable" the claim of the Environmental Minister, Iñaki Arriola, to convene a new award to cover the overruns of the works: “Even more so in the current context of crisis, when this project entails an unjustifiable economic waste of the resources needed to respond to a number of social, urgent and priority needs”.
They do not see the metro as absolutely necessary and remember that there are other proposals to improve public transport and the rail network. “There have been serious problems in construction and the safety of workers and citizens has been put at risk”, he added.
Thus, Satorralaia considered the "darkness" and the unwillingness of the Basque Government and the City Hall of San Sebastian to explain the works of the suburban area worrying. For all these reasons, they have called to participate in the demonstration on Saturday. Now is the time: clear up the responsibilities, stop the metro definitively! Under the motto '.
