San Sebastian is the city that recycles the least in Gipuzkoa
  • The Ecologist Group Eguzki has analyzed data from the San Marcos community of Donostia-San Sebastián for 2020. In recent times, the group has accused institutions of "hypocrisy" and "greenwashing" for the increase of public awareness campaigns in favor of recycling.

Considering the data, San Sebastian was the city that least recycled last year. Only 43% of urban waste was collected selectively and the average of the community was 52%. Astigarraga, Errenteria, Hernani, Lasarte-Oria, Lezo, Oiartzun, Pasaia, Urnieta and Usurbil are the other localities involved in the initiative. All but Lasarte-Oria are above average. In addition, San Marcos is the community that performs the least selective collection in Gipuzkoa. The average of Gipuzkoa is 57.98%, while Donostia-San Sebastián is below 15 points.

On the other hand, Eguzki’s members believe that this will not be resolved by the proliferation of “awareness campaigns” and that it does not depend on the “ecological awareness of citizenship”. They stress the need for “effective” measures: “the effectiveness of the system is decisive”. Finally, they have denounced that the City Hall of Donostia-San Sebastián "makes the responsibility for recycling available to the public". “Stop appearances and become aware.”
