Hego Euskal Herria’s students called a strike on March 24 against educational reforms and in favor of the Socialist Educational System. Thousands of young people joined the call for strike and there were mass demonstrations in Bilbao (Bizkaia), San Sebastian (Gipuzkoa), Vitoria (Álava) and Pamplona (Navarra).

In the morning there were pickets in eleven schools and campuses, and police forces rebelled against the students. At the Public University of Navarre, security forces officers faced youth and the Foral Police joined the campus. On the Vitoria-Gasteiz campus of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the Ertzaintza detained 34 students. That same afternoon there were protests in many villages to protect detainees.

Striker students are accused of causing "public disorder," so they have already begun to testify in court. On 21 October the statements of the defendants began, and by that date five young people were called to testify. The rest of the 29 involved will declare it until January, the next session being 11 November.

UPV disciplinary measures

The UPV/EHU has opened disciplinary proceedings against the 34 detained students, who are currently standing, at least until the end of the judicial process.

In addition, the management of the UPV/EHU has presented an invoice for the "damages" that occurred on the UPV/EHU campuses in this student strike.
