Before the Davos summit: statements by rich people, actions by activists
  • The World Economic Forum, which will last until Friday, has brought together nearly 2,500 economic and political elite authorities at the luxurious Davos ski resort. In view of this, we are seeing the actions of environmental activists, but also the statements of the richest in the world to ask the authorities to tax more.

The summit of the Davos World Economic Forum, which began last Monday, will bring together hundreds of political and economic authorities at the global level. The forum has been held since 1971, founded by the German entrepreneur Klaus Schwab, and has since become a fundamental reference, particularly because it highlights social inequalities in the world.

This year’s edition will have 2,500 representatives in 130 countries, including senior bank officials, presidents of governments and owners of large companies. Mention is made, inter alia, of the war in Ukraine, inflation and possible global economic recession.

On Tuesday afternoon, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the ‘clean’ European industries support plan, called the Green Industrial Plan, which aims to tackle competition in the US and China. By 2030 it would be a fund of EUR 250 billion per year to invest in these "clean" industries.

That's inside. Outside, the protests of entrepreneurs begin. On Monday, environmental activists blocked the elite's main access to this Swiss ski resort: the Alterrheine Aerodrome. About 15 activists from the Climate Debt group hung in this private airport a wooden structure with the banners "We can't keep keeping the 1% richest".

Meanwhile, about 200 million people around the world are asking authorities to "tax the richest". Among the applicants are Abigail Disney, the heir to the Disney empire or the well-known actor Mark Ruffalo, who declared in an open letter "It is time to combat extreme wealth, to tax the rich".
