Precariousness of professional dancers: one in two dantzaris earns less than 10,000 euros per year
  • Frequency and instability add to the reality of professional dancers, as concluded by the final report of the Association of Professional Dances of the Basque Country. Three out of ten are men, but in percentage they live in a better economic situation than women and non-binary people.

Year after year and decade, the situation of professional dancers remains precarious. According to the report drawn up jointly by the Association of Professionals of the Dance of the Basque Country and the Basque Observatory of Culture – always bearing in mind that the case of professional dancers has been analysed rather than leisure – one in two professional dancers earns no more than 10,000 euros a year, with a high frequency. In a way, they point out that this is a report that contrasts and confirms what is intuitively known.

72% have some economic ties with the Public Administration and in 47% of cases, public procurement accounts for more than 46% of the income. In other words, it is clear that the main support is in the institutions, but in most cases the initiatives fall short, because today the precariousness is great. Even between the months worked and quoted, very significant imbalances have been detected.

Gender gap

More than 6 out of 10 dance professionals surveyed were women, 3 out of 10 were men and 7% non-binary. According to age, although there are no significant imbalances, it is concluded that the majority are between 40 and 50 years old, highlighting the balance by level of education.

It has already been mentioned that half of dantzaris earn more than EUR 10,000 per year, while for men the percentage is 70%. For non-binary people, one in three.
