Theatres, theatres and theatres where cultural events are held have been closed since 30 October last year due to the health emergency caused by COVID-19 in the French State. In view of the impossibility of artistic events being carried out by the general public, French public television has launched a channel called Culturebox to broadcast direct television broadcasts.

The Culturebox website has been running since 2013. It shows the cultural content produced by the French group France Télévisions, which manages public television channels in the French State. Now they go one step further and become a television channel.

Since the first days of February, concerts, shows and plays can be seen by TDT and the Internet, among others, as well as "dating with agents of the world of culture". The network will also broadcast repetitions of cultural programmes broadcast on other public television channels, programmes recorded at festivals and performances not previously published.

The president of France Télévisions, Delphine Ernott, said that the chain has been created with the aim of “re-meeting its audience and giving maximum visibility to all the arts.” The chain will not be the usual one. In fact, as Ernott explained, when the halls open again they will be suspended.

The total cost of the Culturebox channel will be around EUR 5 million, although, it is claimed, no more public money will be required for this purpose. It will not be advertised, but the funding will be supplemented with the help of sponsors.
