The EU warns that applications to control COVID-19 clash with the right to privacy
  • The European Union has pointed out that the technologies used to track the chain of those affected may violate the rights of privacy and data protection, as well as motor and religious rights. Almost all EU countries use this technology.

Although they could be useful in controlling the pandemic, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights has concluded that these applications can harm individual rights. For this reason, these applications have given a number of criteria that must be met: that their use is voluntary, that they are used anonymously and that once the pandemic is over, the data is erased.

“In exceptional circumstances, rights can be limited, but the principles of necessity and proportionality can never be forgotten. The question is: “Where and what limits?” the authors of the report say.

Use of data for other purposes

The main concern is the use of the data provided by these applications for other purposes. In addition, the Agency has been concerned about other technologies being used in the context of COVID-19: systems that allow geolocation, drones that are used to measure interpersonal distance and control cameras that are used to measure temperature in the street or in the workplace.
