Costa Rica is the first country in Central America to legalize same-sex marriage
  • The Supreme Court has ruled that the rule prohibiting same-sex marriage in Costa Rica is contrary to the Constitution and therefore becomes legal this Tuesday. It is the first country in Central America to do so.

“It’s an achievement of our dignity,” Teletica has been told by a member of the country’s LGBTI community: “This step is very important because it means that we are on the road to being first-class citizens. So far, we have been second- and third-class citizens.”

At 00:00 in the evening, coinciding with the legal celebration of the marriage, a great celebration has been held by the citizens, although in a virtual way by the pandemic.

Civil weddings have been held in Costa Rica since 2017, but until now they had no legal validity. Thus, there are already 55 marriage applications to be legalized, in addition to those being held on Tuesday (at 00:01 hours the so-called "historic moment" in marriage between two women has been inaugurated).
