They denounce that Coca-Cola is the sponsor of the Romanian presidency of the European Council
  • The NGO Foodwatch reported on 26 February that the company Coca Cola officially sponsored the Romanian presidency of the EU European Council. The association has denounced that the administration that must apply the laws affecting multinationals cannot have such relations and the President of the European Commission, Donald Tusk, has asked the Romanian Prime Minister, Viorica Dăncilâ, to abandon the protectorate, according to Reporterre.

"If junk food and its health consequences are a social problem, it is absolutely unacceptable that the presidency of the European Council supports Coca-Cola," the statement states.

Romania has been elected President of the European Council for six months from January 2019. German journalists reported on 31 January of the existence of Coca-Cola marketing products at the meeting held in Bucharest by the Foreign Ministers. "Coca-Cola proudly supports Romania's first presidency in the EU" announced that messages could be read and that inside were advertising posters that can be seen in tweets.

"Supporting one of Europe's major political structures is truly shocking to Coca-Cola," said Association Director Karine Jacquemart. "A kind of protectorate is in conflict of interests and has an impact on the European political agenda on junk food," he added.

According to Foodwatch, Coca-Cola is fighting for anti-interest laws, such as the rise in sugar taxes in Europe. In the coming months, for example, policy makers in the European Union will have to assess food-related legislation, as well as the important information that food packaging should bring on labelling.
