The California Energy Commission has reached a unanimous decision. This new law aims to save energy and combat climate change. The new legislation will be implemented from 2020 and solar panels will have to be installed in all houses built from then on.

California has been implementing renewable energy policies for years. In recent years, it has invested $42 million to boost solar energy and distributes solar panels free of charge to low-income families. 20% of homes in California already have solar panels.

The Republicans oppose this measure, saying that house prices will rise. By contrast, the California Government has reported that each family would save 40 euros per month to cover one: the mortgage could increase by 40 euros, but each family would save 80 euros in energy consumption.
