Brussels sets an expiry date for the year 2,050 to a period of combustion in which coal, oil and natural gas have been the engines of the economy. By then, it proposed that 80% of electricity be generated from renewable energies and that taxation be used to combat polluting technologies.

The United Nations has called for tripling efforts against climate change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which this year have increased "more than ever".

The Commission’s Environment Director, Joyce Msuya, has encouraged politicians to implement “green” policies that directly target the economy.
