When I heard that a delegation of Zapatistas intended to come to Europe, I was suddenly satisfied. At this time when we are threatened by the pandemic around the world, I realized that those who were interested in overcoming borders and listening to the voice of others deserved my admiration. When I received this news, I remembered the sensations of political travel in the cycle of anti-globalization: I heard again the voice of those who live far away from us in so many common things, and I remembered again that political challenges beyond borders are common and can be addressed and debated in large and varied assemblies.

"The issue of decoloniality in our society is very serious, and the concerns we have are shared with the Zapatistas"

Although this political cycle is now complete (two months ago the 20th anniversary of the Genova 2001 counter-attack has passed), I am sorry that we are looking back and that is why we have to recover many “political gestures”. For example, the political ambition: at that time, the intention was to remove the G8; what is now ours? There was also cooperation between countries and nations, which took place in multilingual assemblies (I recall that the sign language was also used so as not to leave anyone aside). And, of course, be comrades outside their own territory.

The years have passed and I do not have detailed information about the conflicts and the current lines of work of the Zapatistas, but I do know what our challenges and our questions are. I know that the issue of decoloniality is very serious in our country, and I also know that the concerns we have are shared with the Zapatistas. The same thing happens to me when we talk about power or feminism.

By talking, debating and working sincerely with the Zapatistas from Mexico, we will be able to look more rigorously at the challenges of the next course and reflect more on our political challenges.
