A march against the extension of the Supersur road around Bilbao is organized on Sunday
  • Last week, the General Manager Unai Rementeria announced "the most important action to be carried out in Bizkaia in the 21st century". It's two great works. On the one hand, the tunnel that will pass through Ibaizabal aspi and, on the other, the extension of the road known as Supersur. A number of social actors have opposed this latest work.

Both projects are part of the comprehensive plan to solve the problem of traffic jams that generate high traffic densities in the metropolitan area of Bilbao. According to Unai Rementeria, General Manager, "this global solution will create new ways of moving and reform the road network." Mainly to free up the three most "serious" traffic problems: Arrontegi (137,000 vehicles per day), Max Center (127,000 vehicles) and La Avanzada (114,000 vehicles). The Provincial Council of Bizkaia will invest 580 million euros in the construction of the tunnel and the extension of the Supersur road.

An extension of

The Provincial Council has already approved the tender for the work to complete the southern variant of Supersur or the metropolitan area (second phase). In this way, the section that is made will merge with the AP-68 motorway in Arrigorraga and "acquire all the sense that it had from the beginning", in the words of Rementeria. The Provincial Council expects the second phase of the variant to be completed by 2023. When completed, according to technical studies, 24,000 vehicles per day will pass through the variant.

Against social, economic and environmental grounds

Various social actors and environmental groups Ampliación Supersur No! The platform has been presented to oppose the project of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia to increase the Supersurra from the Peñaskale toll to the intermediate part of Betelu.

According to data provided by representatives of the Platform, an estimated expenditure of 47 million euros per kilometre to be extended is expected and the project would, among other things, have a detrimental effect on the Bolintxu valley, an area with special protection in Pagasarri.

Among the reasons given to oppose the project, they argue that "from social, economic and environmental points of view, it is impossible to justify the works". According to them, "there is no shortage of road infrastructure, but a serious problem of mobility management as well as of territorial and urban planning".

March on Sunday

On Sunday, May 20th, they organized a walk through Bolintxu and its surroundings in Ampliación Supersur No! members of the platform. The purpose of this action is to visit the sites that would be crossed by the extension of the Supersur that it is intended to build and express its "opposition to the senseless work".

The march will start at 9:00 p.m. in Zabalburu Square. The maximum duration is two hours and the end will be in the neighborhood of Buia. On the occasion of the festivities of Buia, various activities have been organized throughout the day.
