The first round of the Ecuadorian presidential elections has left narrow results between the two main candidates: With more than 91% counted, the current president, Daniel Noboa, obtained 44.3% of the votes, while the correist, Luisa González, obtained 43.8%, according to the Electoral Commission of Ecuador CNE. Since neither of them has won more than half of the votes in Sunday’s votes, they will compete again in the second round.
Noboa has not made a statement about the elections, and at the headquarters of his party, the right-wing National Democratic Action, the party members have been depressed when the results are known. Gonzalez, on the other hand, considers the support received as a victory and speaks with satisfaction to his followers in the capital of Quito: “Our trend will be to keep going up and Daniel Noboa will keep going down.”
After the resignation of Guillermo Lasso, president between 2021 and 2023, Noboa won the elections with 52% of the votes. The beginning of the year 2025 is proving difficult for Ecuadorians: the number of homicides per day, unemployment and poverty, among others, have increased.
