They will ask the Gipuzkoan authorities to stop the Zubieta incinerator and not burn more waste “either in Zubieta, Añorga, Bergara or elsewhere.” Donostia Bizirike, Eguzki and Ekologistak Martxan have also called for an excursion to the incineration plant.

The incinerator was inaugurated in December 2020 and since then EAM has repeatedly denounced its character, not least because the burning of waste is not a waste management solution but also pollutes the environment.

Since the incinerator EAM was launched, citizen control of pollution began and since then it has taken several samples through the Dutch foundation ToxiWatch. The results of the study conducted with the data collected five years ago will be published throughout the sessions.

The first will take place on Saturday in Hernani and at 18:00 in the Sandiusterri room the conclusions of the study by Abel Arkenbout and Kirsten Bouman, representatives of ToxikoWatch will be presented. The presentation will take place on the 27th in Usurbil. And a third at the General Meetings of Gipuzkoa, following the unanimous approval of its Sustainability Committee, the date of which has not yet been set.

The study published in 2022 by Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) on three incinerators in Spain, the Czech Republic and Lithuania found that there is a high level of pollution in the environment of these facilities, which poses a risk to the environment and the health of people living nearby.
