Salhaketa Araba has denounced "blunt and terrified" the situation of prisoners in the Basque territory, to see "suicide as a single solution". The association has emphasized that every two days a prisoner dies in the prisons of the Spanish State, in most cases by suicide for serious illnesses and for prolonged penalties: "Knowing that in the prisons there are 75% of people with mental illness, the first step would be for all prisoners to be formalized against suicide". He also stresses that prison "creates and increases" the chances of suicide.
