Eviction of Otxantegi in Berango
  • Eviction was established by 18 April and several people approached to defend the land. The Ertzaintza, however, did not come and the courts have reported the delay in the emptying attempt. This is the second time they have managed to stop eviction.

For the second time, Otxantegi in Berango (Bizkaia) has been depopulated. For the previous Thursday, 18 April, the eviction of the occupied rural area was consolidated. So that morning, at 08:30, many people came to defend the Communities.

But the Ertzaintza wasn't. Around 11:00, courts warned of delayed eviction. Because, according to the Ertzaintza, it has not had "sufficient resources" to carry out the emptying of land. "The Ertzaintza has seen that it did not have enough resources to empty the area," said Otxantegi members to the Hiruka portal: "We will now have a third attempt, but we will stop it again."

In November 2023, the defense and eviction of the Communities was achieved for the first time: the eviction planned for 23 November. They then determined a second date for eviction on 18 April, but they also had to postpone it.

The General Urban Management Plan of Berango (PGOU) aims to build more than 2,300 homes. In this sense, it is intended to empty the communal lands of Otxantegi.
