Trade unions call on the Basque Government’s Department of Education to shoulder its responsibilities
  • Under the motto “Ensuring the health of the educational community, negotiating measures”, the unions LAB, ELA, STEILAS, CCOO and UGT announced a mobilization for this Wednesday in a joint statement. Following the plan presented last week by the Basque Government, the unions have described as "even more irresponsible" the decision they have now taken to leave school for each centre.

At 11:00 p.m. they will mobilise in front of the Basque Government headquarters in Bilbao to request, inter alia, that they negotiate return measures with the agents.

The Basque Government has raised the possibility of returning to classroom studies in Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and ESO 4 or not, on what dates and conditions, to each educational center, and the unions have denounced that it is irresponsible, “because while health remains unguaranteed, the Department of Education puts all the responsibility on the centers, families and students, seriously failing their responsibility”.

They recall that it is up to the Department of Education to collect and predict in an appropriate plan the concrete criteria, protocols, measures and means to ensure health, so that each center can then carry them out within its autonomy.

Risk of cracking

In addition, they have criticized that the fact that the decision is made available to each center has a clear risk of generating and increasing gaps between students from different centers, “because some will receive in-person learning and others will not”.

They call on the Department of Education to assume its responsibilities, to negotiate the return measures and to enable the necessary measures to ensure people's health. The trade unions intend to announce that, without negotiation, they will appeal for this year’s general strike.
