United to demobilize pensioners

The PP government has many open fronts and can suffer a great loss among its voters. The pensioners’ sector – one of the most important for obtaining votes – was on the edge, with growing mobilizations in the Spanish state. And these mobilizations have been led by pensioners from the Southern Basque Country, also affecting the PNV that gets many votes from there.

The interests of the PP and the PNV have come together to save the General State Budgets, using pensioners as if they were electoral merchandise. For this, which previously seemed impossible due to the lack of money, it is now possible, because it is beneficial for both parties in terms of elections, and they have agreed a 1.5% increase linked to the growth of the CPI for this year and the following year. They have also succeeded in breaking the unity among pensioners, because for some the increase, which has also been achieved as a result of mobilizations, may be sufficient. However, many others, especially in the Southern Basque Country, do not believe it.

The EAJ should be reminded that this increase can only mean an increase of 10 euros per month, which is very low for the 247,000 Basque pensioners who charge less than 700 euros. The platforms of local pensioners have claimed that pensions would be supplemented up to 1,080 euros, if that had been decided now, then it would be credible.

The state budgets – which all seem to have the support of the PNV – are anti-social, militaristic and re-centralizing. The Jeltzale stand alongside a corrupt government that violates the Statute of Guernica. Can you really trust a government that has been signed for dozens of years but has not yet transferred its powers? Who guarantees compliance with the agreement?
