Argitan denounces the intention of the City Hall of Barakaldo to close the night hostel for women in April
  • Seven women currently use the municipal hostel for women's night. The City of Barakaldo has expressed its intention to close in April and the Argitan Women's Advisory Centre is genuinely concerned about this: "Where are these women locked up, two of them victims of gender violence? Will they return to the mixed hostel that is not in the best condition? Or directly to the street? ".

The Women ' s Advisory Centre, Argitan, has denounced in a note issued on 24 March that the risk of closure of the municipal shelter is high. She also pointed out that the situation of women remains the most serious in the situation generated by the coronavirus. First, because forced abuse increases the risk of sexual assault and male violence. Argitan, who has been working in Barakaldo for 23 years, has treated 66 cases of male violence in the last year, "the worst data in the last decade".

Fear of losing health or work

Argitan has pointed out that most women working in precarious conditions work precisely in "strategic" sectors in the coronavirus crisis such as health, education, care of people or the distribution of the former. Argitan has denounced that in these sectors "most workers have to cope with situations of health risk and risk of loss of employment". They have to deal with the pandemic without the minimum conditions of safety at work, as well as putting children and elderly people at risk in their homes, and they have to take public transportation to go to work, where the risk of contagion is higher."

Argitan calls for structural solutions

The Algerian Women ' s Advisory Centre has called for structural solutions: Ensuring decent employment, on an equal footing for all. Strengthen social protection so that women have a decent life in normal and exceptional situations. And public services, universal and free of charge, be they children's schools, canteens, nursing homes and nursing homes, leave the current model in which women are responsible for their care".
