The mayor of Pamplona, Cristina Ibarrola, announced at a press conference that the Gurutze Plaza project will be “temporarily suspended”.

In the hearing he states that the parking is based on the “demands of the neighbors” and that the reurbanization of Plaza de Cruz meets the need to “create a more living space”, as it is considered a place of “little activity” and “insecurity” in its surroundings. However, it acknowledges that it has neither political nor neighbour support for the project.

He accuses EH Bildu of driving the “atmosphere of violence,” although protests in the neighborhood have been peaceful. He denounces that there have been “attacks”, both verbal and infrastructure, but, as Berria has pointed out, he has not presented evidence of such attacks.

“We now have no guarantees to complete a project that satisfies most citizens. We believe this decision is the best option to find a more protected solution, because we have to improve the city,” said the mayor of UPN in relation to the project.

Given the damage that the underground parking intended to build the municipal government of Pamplona in Sangüesa Street will affect the trees of the Gurutze Square, many of which were planned to be cut off, the neighbors have made numerous and massive mobilizations in recent months.
