At the end of last summer, Sopeloztarras archaeologists Maitane Larrea and Ander Ugarte carried out a superficial examination of the Bareño area, in which historians have found that the first works of a supermarket have revealed some remains. There have been 21 vestiges of rock that could be of the Middle or Upper Paleolithic, which has forced the work to be postponed in order to be able to analyze the circumstances of the finding in a provisional way.

Ugarte explained that the earth movements carried out during the summer have evicted some silex plots from the subsoil, which has allowed them to easily locate the aforementioned evidences. The report was sent to the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the company in charge of the construction of the supermarket will analyse the potential of the site. For this purpose, the archeology team Suhar will carry out surveys to verify the existence or not of the archaeological site.

Ugarte has pointed out that the traces found can be divided into two stages: on the one hand, the Middle Paleolithic, by the discovery of stone fragments treated with the Levallois method, very characteristic of the Mousterian culture; and on the other, the Upper Paleolithic, by the discovery of laminar and burile fragments. All these silex fragments have been delivered to the Arkeologi Museoa de Bilbao, and cannot be assessed yet because they have been found on the skin and in an altered context.

This finding has not been catalogued yet, but considering that in Sopela and Uribe Kosta as a whole there is a rich archaeological context, experts believe it will be important to analyze it. As explained, this is not the first time that these types of findings occur in the Bareño area: The terrain to study now is the part of the Bareño site discovered in 2008 by archaeologists Joseba Ríos Garaizar and Diego Garate.
