Meetings of Gaztetxe and Gazte Asanblad
Discrepancies in recent years have reduced the processing capacity and attractiveness of centres
  • Young people from various assemblies of young people and gaztetxes have organized meetings at the level of Euskal Herria for 19 October, in Leitza (Navarra). Its objective is to reflect, interrelate and strengthen the struggle around the situation and functions of the movement. Answering in writing the questions of ARGIA Martin Urkiaga Zabala and Arrate Mendizabal Etxebarrieta in organizing the meetings
Zigor Olabarria Oleaga @zoleaga1 2024ko irailaren 23a

You have explained that the Meetings you presented in June were prepared “openly, assembly and horizontal”. How has the process been and how many youth and gaztetxe assemblies have participated?

It is true that in recent years there have been regular meetings between young people and Gaztetxes from all over the Basque Country. That is why we were missing young people from different peoples from joining together and reflecting collectively on the situation of the movement, the challenges and obstacles we have, occupation and self-management.

That is why we decided to start the process of organizing the meetings. This is a process that has lasted for months for people from all places to participate in the event. Dozens of young people from the seven territories have participated in the organization process in one way or another, and many others have informed us of their intention to approach the same day.

"Dozens of young people from the seven territories have participated in one way or another in the organization process and many others have moved us their intention to approach the same day"

You said that in the movement there is “atomization and polarization”, and that the encounters also have the objective of responding to that. What view do you have of the assemblies of young people and gaztetxes that have participated in the organization of the meetings?

It is undeniable that the situation of the youth movement in the Basque Country also directly influences the assemblies of young people and gaztetxe. We believe that the debates and discrepancies that have prevailed in recent years have undermined the capacity for transformation and the attractiveness of the youth and gaztetxe assemblies.

The young people who participated in the process think that the assemblies of gaztetxe and gazte have to be spaces formed by members of different strategic lines or political movements, within a few common political minima. Respond to local problems at local level and implement real alternatives.

You announced round tables and practical workshops, what is the program?

In our social networks you can find all the details about the program that we have organized. We have organized workshops to reflect on the situation of the movement and the relations of power and attitude that occur in our spaces, training sessions on occupation and self-management, a debate session on the music scene, communication and politics or on different forms of struggle. There will also be food and some concerts, and whoever wants it will have room to sleep.

Young people and Gaztetxes are often at the starting point of repression. In recent years there have been evictions or trials, fines of thousands and thousands of euros in application of the Mordaza Law... How do you see the situation?

Repression applies to all the militants and movements that we organize against this oppressive and unfair system, so we cannot understand it as an isolated case. That is why it is essential to join forces in dealing with such cases and to respond by means of organised solidarity.

As far as we are concerned, we call jointly to respond to any attempt at eviction, theft, judgment, fine or persecution against Gaztetxe and Gazte Asanblad.
