A study published this Monday by Nature Climate Change leaves little room for doubt: 20 per cent of Australia ' s forests have been destroyed by forest fires. Over 5.8 million hectares. The most affected areas have been the state of New South Wales and the state of Victoria, according to the NGO.
Scientists have confirmed that this is the most devastating fires ever recorded, as on average about 2 per cent of Australia ' s forests burned before the disaster of the past two months.
Furthermore, fire damage evaluators have ensured that the results of their investigations are probably lower than the destruction actually suffered. The data have not taken Tasmania into account, for example, and if burned forests are added, the disaster would be even greater.
