  • The construction works of the complex have not yet been completed; it is estimated that some 200,000 tonnes of waste could be collected annually. Although there is no specific date for its extension, the construction of a non-hazardous waste management centre in Azkoitia is planned. In particular, all types of waste will be collected, sorted and treated in the area to be conditioned next to the Alto de Azkarate. The Department of the Environment of the Basque Government has authorised the adequacy of the space as the authorization was published in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country yesterday.

Company Larke 360, S.L. manage the area to be built next to the existing tunnel between Azkoitia and Elgoibar at the top of the port of Azkarate. The total area of the plot shall be 36,898 square metres, with a maximum annual management of 183,390 tonnes of waste.

Various details on the area have been gathered in the magazine, as well as the type of waste to be collected there. These include building materials, ceramic products — waste from the manufacture of bricks, tiles and building materials — waste from the manufacture of plastics, synthetic rubbers and artificial fibres, metals and their alloys, as well as asbestos-containing insulation and construction materials.

This plot located in Azkarate is currently used for fillings. However, the company Larke 360 has already been authorised to carry out the works for the refurbishment of the space for non-hazardous waste, so the processing of these is the responsibility of the City Hall. Construction works shall be carried out in two phases. In the first phase the western section of the plot will be conditioned: access road, offices, scale and chemical bath (3,685 m2). In the second, the western section (21,517 m2) shall be conditioned.

As explained by the Azkoitia City Council to URL0, with the permission of the Basque Government, it is the City Council that is in charge of processing this space “as an additional economic activity”.
