ARGIA celebrates its centenary in Pamplona, its hometown
  • What would you think if Father Damaso Intza and Father Buenaventura fraile capuchino had seen in the courtyard of the convent of Pamplona the Celestial Light that they created 100 years later? Who knows, you can't get it right in these kinds of cases, but some of the ARGIA people shared this question last Saturday in the streets of Pamplona.

About 80 people joined the Journey to Origin day organized by ARGIA in Pamplona on 23 February. They began their career in the monastery of the Capuchin of the Rochapea, but before he was a journalist of the magazine in the 1980s, the philologist and professor Iñaki Camino, who explained how he and Josu Landa interviewed Father Damaso Intza in 1986, when he was almost a hundred years old. He also explained how he lived the work of ARGIA during that decade and how he was preparing the team for the creation of Euskaldunon Egunkaria.

Then, under the direction of Patxi Larrion, a collaborator of the magazine, the Argiazale crossed the Aranzadi Park from the Txantrea Germans Bridge and made a tour in the calendar in winter but in a spring atmosphere. The people who approached from Usurbil, Hernani, Lazkao, Bilbao and many villages, were able to enjoy the gardens and beautiful sites of this large meander of the Arga, before arriving at the restaurant Arga in the Rochapea district. There, the Kantuz de la Rochapea choir welcomed the group with a song of congratulation for the centenary and two or three more songs. And after the tour, the group began with great enthusiasm the beautiful and fruitful food offered by the Arga Restaurant. During this time, the writer and collaborator of the magazine Ivan Giménez, resident in the neighborhood, also mentioned several passages of this hard-working neighborhood of Pamplona, among them the Lasarte-Oria, the current headquarters of ARGIA, and the Plazaola train, which passed through the street occupied at that time by the Zarauztarras.

The attendees included the director of Euskarabidea Mikel Arrangi, the writers Inma Errea and Mikel Taberna, the journalist Elixabete Garmendia, Danele Sarriugarte, the CARTOONIST Ainara Azpiazu Axpi, German Sagrario, Reyes Ilintxeta, Kike Diez de Ulurrun.

To the heart of Pamplona

After leaving the Rochapea behind, the group ascended Santo Domingo Street to the Archivo de Navarra, the old palace of the kings of Navarra, where Santi Leoné talked about the territoriality of the Basque Country, using as an excuse names that the Prussian linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt used to name Euskal Herria. The Basque territory, the Abertzale, the Carlist, Victor Pradera and many other names offered a very attentive group to his words.

From there to the Plaza de San Francisco, there were the comrades Ixabel Bereziartua and Estitxu Eizagirre with the post of ARGIA, realizing the centenary at the head of the city of the Basques. There, Patxi Larrion explained that time had swallowed the historical-cultural ginkana that had been prepared in the program and was to be suspended. Many of them, with their feet tired and wanting half a glass, welcomed the announcement with joy, while others complained, “because we wanted to know more about Pamplona”.

After the throat was refreshed in the bars of the Old Party with two drinks, the group of 50 people went to the Maldi Association, ready to start the food offered by ARGIA. We thought of a standing meal, with a glass and a potato tortilla on the right and on the left, but no, before the cider the tired Argiazale asked for a chair. At 18:00, each of them began to join their kabiara. The bertso "...eta zu kontalari" that bertsolari Subai hill brought to light was also sung in the food: "Cause server without altaboz / Give your greatness to life / Give it zero trash / journalism".

ARGIA members recalled that on the occasion of the centenary many activities will be carried out throughout the year, including a significant monthly event in some part of the Basque Country.
