The permission to kill the last wolf of Álava caused a great revuelo.El on 6 February last the Provincial Council of Álava authorised the sacrifice of the last wolf of the territory claiming "the damage caused by the animal". He gave the farmers of the Sierra de Álava a period of fourteen days for the wolf to die.
Environmental groups such as Ekologistak Martxan and the Lobo Group of the Basque Country have obtained 105,000 signatures. On 5 February last the Basque Government declared interest in the declaration of wolf as a threatened species and the following day the Council annulled the hunting permit.
However, the Provincial Council of Álava has stressed that the decision is provisional and will be maintained as long as the consequences of the presence of the wolf in the catalogue of threatened species are analysed.
The Basque Wolf Group has expressed its satisfaction at the decision taken by the Basque Government and by the Council. The measure has defined it as "pioneer" in the Spanish state, although it has explained that the dissatisfaction of the lower rate among threatened species has left them "dissatisfied".
