Those created by ordinary users can be largely unwise, but the Internet giants themselves are repeating these situations and this seems more serious, as they can have a global impact. A serious case that can be highlighted earlier this year is what Apple is doing with its news summaries, delivering fake news, not just on its behalf, but on behalf of the big news organizations.
What Apple has done is to launch a news notification system for iPhone users, offering a brief summary of the main news from trusted sources such as the New York Times (NYT) or the BBC, according to the images.
These examples were seen in November and December. Netanyahu was arrested, as if he had reportedly been published by the New York Times; or that Luigi Mangion had committed suicide (source of BBC names). Both news stories are false, and neither NYT nor BBC have published anything like that.
Given these cases to Apple, the iPhone chief said he would probably take steps by the end of 2024, but 2025 has started and this service continues to say nonsense. According to this news, precisely, and what happened this very weekend,
- A Luke Little has won the world darts launch championship. Apple gave the release on the first day of competition, so I couldn't know who was earning that AA for several days.
- That Tennis player Rafael Nadal just got out of the closet because he's gay. This has not happened, at least, when it comes out of the closet.
This dissemination of fake news seemed so worrying to RSF (Reporters without Borders) that Apple was asked to intervene.
