LAB calls for the rights of single mothers to be guaranteed
  • The Spanish Court ruled in March that single-parent families would have 16 weeks of care leave and two-parent families 32 weeks. The LAB syndicate has called the sentence "unacceptable" and on Monday has ratified the importance of the right to custody before the Social Security headquarters in Vitoria.

The Supreme Court, in a judgment of 8 March, agreed that single mothers will have less care leave than families of two parents. Single-parent families shall have a 16 week care permit, while two-parent families of 32 weeks. Social Security does the same, one parent denies the possibility of accumulating two paternity permits.

However, LAB held a demonstration on Monday in defence of the rights of single mothers at the Social Security headquarters in Vitoria. He denounces that in practice the only model is that which is "predominantly in the center", while the rest are "secondary". He also points out that "the mechanism of this (zis)heteropatriarchal system", in addition to guiding the family to enhance and reward the nuclear model, punishes all the possibilities that lie outside it.

The union speaks of a double "oppression": "Discrimination occurs on the basis of sex, since most parents are women and the right to custody is violated and the person to be cared for is discriminated against".

Thus, LAB has called for a "complete system" that places surveillance at the center. Also a law for a Labour Code and a Social Security for the Basque Country and the Basque Country.
