The Parliament of Catalonia opposes the unilateral path on the anniversary of the U1 referendum
  • Today marks the four-year referendum on self-determination in Catalonia on 1 October. Repression has also changed the positions of the independence parties that promoted that referendum. This change took place this Thursday in the Parliament of Catalonia, which passed the law.

The Cup debated this Thursday at the Catalan Parliament on the political position that made the 2017 referendum possible. The political groups have voted on the following text: "The Parliament of Catalonia undertakes to hold the referendum on self-determination before the end of this legislature and will therefore urge the Government of the Generalitat to begin immediately the discussions and work necessary to ensure the referendum."

Very clarifying result: The Cup has remained on its own in this unilateral path. The chief executive, ERC, has abstained, and the other groups, Junts, Catalunya En Comú, PSC, Ciutadans, pp and VOX, have voted against.

On the contrary, ERC and Junts were in favour of putting one foot in the dialogue and the other in the confrontation. In another resolution, the Spanish Government ' s readiness to continue to speak with the President of the Spanish Government is reaffirmed. The proposal is supported by the CSP and by Catalunya En Comú, who have rejected the proposal.

"What would we do differently if we held a unilateral referendum? said JxYes spokesman Mónica Salas at a press conference in Brussels. "In our view, it only makes sense for the referendum on 1 October to be replaced by another agreed referendum, binding on the Spanish State and fully accepted by the international community," he stressed.

ERC, negotiation and spirit

Events commemorating the referendum on 1 October are being held in Catalonia today. In an institutional act of the Generalitat in Barcelona, President Pere Aragonès called for the unity of the independence parties and defended that independence is the only solution to the political conflict between Catalonia and the Spanish State: "The referendum is an inescapable solution, we now have to recover the spirit of 1 October," he added.
