The House of Deputies adopted the bill decriminalising abortion with 131 votes in favour, 117 against and six abstentions. Thousands of women in their own clothes have celebrated the passage of the law at the door of the Parliament of Buenos Aires, coinciding with the feminist movement.
Two years earlier, Members had voted a similar initiative, but the Senate rejected the project, as those who had opposed it had seven votes more than the new anterior.De, in this first step the legalization plan for abortion has gone ahead, and unlike 2018, the initiative has been driven by the Argentine Government itself and has the support of the president.
The draft legislation provides for the right to terminate pregnancy until 14 weeks. Nearly 500 social organizations across the country have been working for years on the right to abortion and have submitted their proposal to Congress eight times since 2007.
It is estimated that each year more than 300,000 abortions are performed in Argentina and that about 40,000 women have to be hospitalized for complications. To date, in 1983, more than 3,000 women have lost their lives in illegal abortions throughout the country.
