How to Use the Surname Graph
  • The Commonwealth of Basque Municipalities has launched a campaign to promote the use of surname graphics. In particular, the call is made to parents with minor children, since if the parents support the call, it will also be automatically addressed to those children under 18.

To get started, you need to collect the following documents:

  • Photocopy of the DNI.
  • The birth certificate. You can apply online by clicking here (Spanish administration site, valid for the whole of the Basque Country).
  • The census document. It can be requested in each municipality, sometimes it can also be done electronically
  • Family book in the case of citizens who are married or have children. However, only family books were produced in 2021. Families who don’t have it don’t need to take it.

With the documentation in hand, it is possible to carry out the dialoguing of surnames in a court, it is necessary to take the turn beforehand, in the pre-registration service of civil registries (address of Bizkaia, Álava and Gipuzkoa).

If the Basque language of the surname is used, it will normally be regulated by the Basque Government (the possibility of exhausting the search here), but exceptions can be negotiated in court to choose Music > Mujika (for example) instead of Muxika.
