9,000 civilians have died since the invasion of Ukraine, according to the UN
  • On 7 July, it is 500 days since Russia started the war on Ukraine. The UN reports that 9,000 civilians in Ukraine have since died, 500 children.

The number of victims has been reported by Noel Calhoun, Head of the United Nations Mission for the Observance of Human Rights in Ukraine, at a press conference on 7 July. However, he notes that the number of deaths may be “much higher” than that officially confirmed. He says the number of civilian deaths in 2023 is lower than in 2022, but it has increased from May to June. In July, the Russian army claimed to have killed eighteen civilians and wounded more than 47.
