The Durango Decision Platform wants 2,300 signatures to request a consultation on railway lands
  • The special plan drawn up for the former railway area in 2006 included five towers of houses – a total of 554 houses – in addition to recreational areas. Well, some citizens who oppose this project have created a platform called Decisión, and they want to decide what will be done in this area through a popular consultation. The presentation took place on Wednesday at the Marista school and generated a lot of expectation. More than 100 people have joined, who have filled the room.

To request the questionnaire, a collection of signatures has begun on Wednesday; it is estimated that they will need at least 2,300 (10% of the 18-year-olds registered) to present the proposal to the city council. It has been announced that in the coming weeks the signing tables will be installed in different places and that on June 17 a party will be organized to give a great impulse to this intention. "With the signatures, we think it's going to be hard for them to say no to the questionnaire. We have that hope," said Mikel Uriguena, a member of the Board of Directors.

In addition, the City Council is requested to keep the project during the interrogation. They criticize the receipt of "contradictory information" about the project and emphasize the need for real information. "We have the right to claim it as citizens, because it is our land," said Bego Larrañaga, a member of the platform. Questions have also emerged from the people who have joined the presentation.

On the new road

The proponents of the popular consultation believe that there is no need for a house tower. In addition, they warn that the new road that will be built to give way to the houses will fill "Biscuit de Durán" and Ezkurdi by car. On the contrary, ideas for the construction of a park, a green space or a playground have been launched in this space.

On the other hand, it is recalled that the ETS and the municipal agreement have been appealed to the court by the opposition. The ETS has a debt of about 4 million euros because the height of the house towers exceeds what is established in the rules. The agreement deals with how to cancel this debt. But for the municipal government, this requirement has an "electoralist character".
