Women around the world work 12,500,000,000 hours a day without charge
  • Capitalism in its gross. The distribution of wealth is very unbalanced and, above all, the global economy is based on the work done by millions of unpaid women. This is the conclusion that can be drawn from reading this year’s report that Oxfam usually draws before the Davos meeting. Below are some data extracted from it.

  • The world's 22 richest men have more than all women across Africa at once.
  • Every day, 12,500,000,000 hours of unpaid care work for women and young women around the world.
  • The contribution of this work to the global economy amounts to $10.8 trillion a day, three times the size of the global technology industry.
  • If the world’s richest 1% were to pay 0.5% more taxes, the investment needed to create 117 million jobs over ten years in the education, health or care sectors for children and the elderly would be achieved.
  • In 2019, 2,153 super rich people had more wealth than 4,600,000,000 people.
  • The richest 1% in the world has more wealth than 88.4% of the population as a whole.
  • In percentage terms, the richest 7,800,000 have more than 6,900,000,000 people.
  • Women in rural communities and low-income areas do a daily work of 14 hours that they do not pay, five times more than men in the same communities.
  • Of the 67,000,000 domestic workers in the world, 80 per cent are women.
  • 90 per cent of domestic workers do not have access to the social security system.
  • Globally, men have 50% more wealth than women.
  • Women represent 18 per cent of government ministers and 24 per cent of members of parliaments. Consequently, women are often outside the decision-making spaces.
