Aita Mari, who transported 158 migrants, docked in Mesina
  • Between 9 and 10 February, the Basque fleet rescued 158 people in Mediterranean waters. The freighter has been looking for a permit to dock at a port in Italy or Malta until yesterday, 12 February, the Italian Government has entered the Sicilian port of Mesina. Today the boat has arrived in Sicily, with all the migrants safely.

Among the rescued persons are 51 minors and three pregnant women. Almost all the migrants who were collected last Sunday were of African nationality, while those on Monday were from Bangladesh.

The NGO Humanitarian Marine Rescue (SMH) has reported that: “According to the Convention on the Status of Refugees, none of those rescued in international waters can be returned to their country of origin.” He has therefore pointed out that the European Union must accept those people who have been rescued from the waters.

It has also denounced the "immobilism" of the European Union. And that is, in his own words: "The European Union, while knowing that there are people travelling on precarious boats every month, does not extend search and rescue vessels," criticised "the de facto transfer to self-appointed Libyan coastguards of the management of search and rescue operations."

On the same day as the news of the safe arrival of the 158 rescued migrants, it has been reported that the trial against former Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has been approved.

Salvini, leader of the ultra-right North Lega party, has become famous for its policies against refugees, according to the agency Reuters.Cuando was Minister of the Interior rescued 131 migrants, Gregoretti was transferred to the courts for refusing the berthing permit on board. These migrants were relocated in different European countries after the refusal of Italy.
