The CAV Transport Authority met this Wednesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz and most of the public administrations involved have been in favour of free bus, train and tram travel up to 12 years. At present, this measure is generally applied up to 6 years.

The Minister for Sustainable Mobility and President of EGA, Susana García Chueca, has stated that the decision to extend the gratuity until the age of 12 is a necessary step. "Public transport is one of the axes of the fight against climate change and gratuitousness encourages us to use transport from childhood, creating responsible habits from childhood and, at the same time, accelerates the economies of families," he said. According to the data provided, the measure could directly affect 130,362 children and their families in the CAV (21,955 in Álava, 65,025 in Bizkaia and 43,382 in Gipuzkoa).

The Basque Government will implement this measure from January 2025 in all the means of transport used by Euskotren, such as the trams of Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao and the trains between Bilbao and Hendaia. In the case of Gipuzkoa, the subject will be put to the vote of the Territorial Authority of the Transport of Gipuzkoa, in order to launch gratuitousness throughout the Mugi system. In Vitoria-Gasteiz, this measure has been in force since the end of 2022 in the urban buses of Haya.
