Iñaki Barcena 2023ko abenduaren 28a

A massive demonstration was held on 28 October in Gernika. Since ancient times, perhaps the largest in 1987 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the bombing. It denounced the imposition of the new Guggenheim museum project, protected from the central, autonomous political institution and provincial.Se has shown that a large part of the population of Busturialdea does not see with good eyes this model of tourist and economic-cultural “development” they want to bring from “outside”.

Four months in advance, on 30 May, in an assembly of 50 people in the self-managed space Astra, the project of a participatory process was presented for the creation of the “Busturialdea Sustainability Index”, made up of members of the research group Ekopol and Hartuz of the UPV, of the OMAL (Observatory of Multinationals of Central Latin America) and

A pilot project will be developed in Busturialdea, but can be a reference in other valleys and counties of the Basque Country

One, under the motto of a well-known international franchise, and taking advantage of the appeal of Urdaibai’s natural and landscape qualities, aims to establish a project of economic growth, from top to bottom and without mentioning or measuring negative socio-ecological impacts.

The others, on the contrary, have designed a participatory process in which they want to carry out an analysis and measurement of five axes in collaboration between researchers and citizens. To start, observe and learn how the metabolic axis is and how it evolves, i.e., the inputs and outputs of energy and materials in Busturialdea. Or collect and analyze environmental quality data provided by indigenous ecosystems, as well as economic activities, social cohesion and citizen participation or other dimension of life.

For some, the design will be carried out only by experts, well paid, but following the appointment of the governing institutions and parties, with an almost unique objective of economic growth. From the point of view of others, a pilot project will be developed in Busturialdea, but it can be a reference in other valleys and counties of the Basque Country. Data from Busturialdea (from the five axes) will be collected and a participatory process of discussion with local citizens, social partners, associations and institutions will be launched over the next two years. They're looking for money to organize jobs. Others are looking for new businesses with everybody's money.
